Reading from the SAW

Upon reading part of our assignment this week, I really liked how the book gave locations to find research. Things like google, yahoo, and Lycos are all search engines, when used properly, can help you along nicely with your paper. Also, things like the library or our professor (obviously) were brought up. Asking people for help can be intimidating, but they really know the best way to find research, without writing the paper for you.

Reading: Model Critique

October 7, 2009 at 3:07 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

After doing the reading in A Sequence for Academic Writing, I really got to see how a critique is done. I understood what we talked about in class and what needed to be included in a critique, but seeing it actually done really helped. I also wasn’t aware that you could both agree and diagree with the author or the topic in a critique. I thought you had to either agree or disagree with the author’s views; however, I am now aware that you don’t have to. I liked how in the model critique the author points out, “If Ryan defends high standards in one breath and criticizes parents in the next for pushing children to acheive these standards, she is only reflecting a confusion in the larger culture.”  The author points out how the mother contradicted herself by agreeing there should be high standards but then saying that parents shouldn’t be pushing their children. This model critique really helped me and now hopefully I will be able to write a good critique myself for next week.
