The End

December 10, 2009 at 2:10 pm (Uncategorized) ()

Overall, I enjoyed Professor Ludeker’s class. It helped me with producing a better paper than I could have before. Through improving my organization skills, audience focusing, and developing my research methods, this english class has made me become more aware of the power I have with my writing as well as helping me become a better writer with credibility. During the entire class, I chose to complete my assignments with integrity; I am proud of my efforts and I got a lot out of this class. What do did you all get out of taking this class?

The Final Stages

December 1, 2009 at 2:02 pm (Uncategorized) ()

Hello class,

The end is near and I hope everyone is doing well with the final draft and the annotated bibliography. Though we have not had class, I have still been working on my paper to make sure it is as perfect as possible. My appointment for the writing center is this week, on Thursday; I hope everyone has scheduled an appointment because they are beginning to get booked with appointments.

The conference with Professor Ludeker was helpful for me and I enjoyed getting her feedback. She gave me advice on organization by looking at my paper from different “angles” to evaluate which method is best. I am still trying to figure out which method is best, but I am sure I will be able to select once I visit the writing center.

Final Paper Advice

November 19, 2009 at 3:50 pm (Uncategorized) ()

Hello class, I have noticed that many of you are having some difficulties with your final paper from reading the blog posts. This is unfortunate and I wish you all the best of luck to succeed with this paper. However, I strongly believe that we should all take advantage of the Writing Center and our conferences with Professor Ludeker. As I said before, the Writing Center was helpful for me when I visited for my synthesis paper. Also, I think we are forgetting that most of the information that we are using has already been obtained and are in your annotated bibliography. Utilizing these sources will help with focusing the final product of the paper as well as giving ideas of what you will focus on to obtain our last few sources. If we all use these helpful tips, we will succeed at writing this paper. Good luck!

Argument Paper and Audience: What do you think?

November 12, 2009 at 4:08 pm (Uncategorized) ()

Today during class, we spoke about focusing on a specific, narrow audience. This aspect of our final papers–selecting an audience to present it to–will make the paper a lot more structured. However, I believe it could complicate things. For example, I am writing about the Neonatal Intesive Care Unit which is a hospital unit dedicated to premature babies and ill infants. I will argue that counseling should be madatory to parents who will give birth before the birth of the child instead of after the birth; this will proactively reduce stresses that stem from the NICU and provide info to parents ahead of time so the focus will be the child instead of the parents. Though my topic is set in stone, I am not sure if my audiences will conflict with the material I’ll be presenting. I would like my audience to health care officials who can put this idea into action and I would also like for adults that will be future parents to be apart of my audience as well to inform them about the benefots of this and what could happen if this proactive approach isn’t implemented. I notice that I will have to provide future parents with more information than officials who will, presumably, know more about the subject. However, I believe the officials will be impressed if I provide this  info which will show dedication and my idea will thoroughly presented. So, I would like to hear from you all. Do you believe these audiences will clash? Is it possible to reach out to both? Or should I just choose one? You thoughts will be appreciated! Thank you!

Peer Review

November 3, 2009 at 7:53 pm (Uncategorized) ()

Today’s class was very helpful for me and the class. Usually, I hate peer review; I never thought it helped me with my papers and I didn’t like judging others’ work. However, today, I realized the purpose of peer review and how it can be a useful tool to my classmates. While I was in class, one of my classmates approached me and told me how much they liked my paper and my word choice. She also said that reading  my paper gave her ideas about how to structure her paper. By having this conversation, I felt that writing my paper was all the more purposeful because my writing helped someone else. I also enjoyed reading the papers of my peers since I was able to help them to my best ability while using this experience to benefit my paper. I noted all of the things that I saw in my peers’ work and I used to analyze how my paper was written in order to improve it. Peer review is all about exchanging helpful suggestions and using this exercise to benefit yourself and others and I’m glad I was able to learn this today.

Today’s Lesson on Synthesis

October 27, 2009 at 2:24 pm (Uncategorized) ()

During today’s class, I liked Professor Ludeker’s idea of giving us a chance to work with our own sources in class. She explained the text that we read prior to the class and allowed us to put our skills to use with the materials we will use for our synthesis. I thought this method was very effective for me since we could apply our knowledge of how to indicate the themes and purposes of our papers right after she explained it; her clarifications were fresh in our minds and it helped me formulate my ideas better than usual. In addition, Professor Ludeker used examples of our topics and from the text to further our comprehension of the ideas on how to use the information from our sources to decide on an approcah for our synthesis papers. Overall, I loved the structure of our class today; it was interactive and informative and I hope classes continue to be held this way.

The Writing Center

October 14, 2009 at 4:03 pm (Uncategorized) ()

While preparing my critical analysis paper, I immediately wanted to seek help to be proactive with the assignment. So, I scheduled an appointment with the writing center which was more helpful than I anticipated. In fact, I would strongly suggest that everyone visit the writing center for these and other majors assignments we’ll be receiving. The help I was given was helpful with structuring my analysis paper and being more confident with my work. For example, the person who helped me made me summarize my article to her to make it easier for me to do so in the actual paper. Together, we also used the format given from our book, SAW, to help guide us with the ideal way to structure my paper. With the guidelines from SAW, on pages 73-74, we briefly molded the information from my article into an outline form that I used to formulate my paper. Once I left the writing center, I felt more confident with this paper, being as though I was extremely nervous about writing a critique for the first time. For these reasons, I encourage you all to utilize the writing center to become better writers and strengthen your papers.

Easy Writer Reading Response

October 6, 2009 at 2:40 pm (Uncategorized) ()

While reading about a fair use of information in the book A Sequence to Academic Writing, I read an interesting piece from the text that I wasn’t aware of. Meaning, I never took this into consideration while writing. In the text, on page 64, it is expressed that a writer should make sure the data is accurate as well as a citation of representative information which adheres to “fair play” while engaging in writing. To refresh everyone’s memory, this stresses that you should present your audience with all the evidence that coincides with your topic. Therefore, you should not simple present information about your topic that only helps your argument. I never took this notion into consideration; in the past, I believe I have only presented the needed information of the topic that helped my argument because I didnt’ believe the opposing ideas were necessary for a paper. However, reading this section of our class book allowed me to see that this is an ethical choice that I should and will use in the future in order to inform my audience the best way possible in addition to being an objective writer, when necessary.
